Register Online: Introduction to Kendo

The Steveston Kendo Club will be offering an introductory course to Kendo, the Japanese way of the sword, for Students (age 8 and older) this summer.

From this course, you will learn:

The basics of kendo etiquette
The origins of kendo and kendo history
How to hold a shinai (a bamboo sword)
How to move your feet, kendo style
How to strike a blow with your shinai

This course will be taught by world-class kendo instructors and practitioners. Our instructors have been members of Canada’s national kendo team and have competed and trained with some of the very best kendo practitioners in the world. This course will be taught at the Steveston Martial Arts Centre adjacent to the Steveston Community Centre.

The cost is $150 which includes the cost of a bamboo sword (shinai) and a shinai bag. Those who successfully graduated from this class may be invited, by the Head Sensei, to join the club as members in September.

Classes will be Monday and Fridays on the following dates:

  • July 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28, 31
  • Aug 4, 11

*It is your responsibility to note the above dates. One of the criteria for passing and for being invited back for our Fall program is to successfully graduate from this class with an attendance rate of 8/10 classes.
