May I come and watch a practice?
Absolutely—this is very much encouraged before registering with our club. Please refer to our schedule and feel free to drop by. Remember to remove your shoes when entering our practice hall.
How do I join the club?
The Steveston Kendo Club accept a small number of students once per year after they complete an introductory summer program. We usually post a registration link for this course every March. Join our newsletter to be notified when registration opens.
What is the minimum age for registration?
We currently only accept students that are at least 8 years of age.
How often will I practice?
For new members, practices are held twice a week (Wednesdays and Fridays). Check out our current practice schedule.
What is the etiquette in regards to entering and leaving the dojo?
Before entering the dojo, remove your shoes. When passing through the threshold of the door, turn to the scrolls at the front of the dojo and offer a short bow at the hips. Make sure to bow before leaving as well. We thank you for respecting our traditions.
How much does it cost?
Juniors (students under 15 years of age) $120
Adults (16 years of age and over) $155
Fees cover the cost of classes from September to December and include the cost of a shinai (bamboo sword) and a carrying case. As we are a not-for-profit, help us keep costs low by volunteering at our various events throughout the year.
What do I wear to my first practice?
We ask that you choose comfortable and preferably athletic attire for your first practice. No equipment is required.
When may I purchase armour or bogu?
We ask that beginners and first-timers not purchase bogu without the express permission of the Head Sensei.
